An interpretive framework identifying the mechanics of coercive control.

“The personal stories are different,
but the pattern of coercive control is the same”

WHAT IS MAGGIE'S LEGACY

“An interpretive framework of coercive control”

Domestic violence is a complex issue with many contributing factors, and it is not surprising that despite the efforts of governments, various agencies and organizations, the rates of domestic violence in Australia have not decreased significantly. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue, leading to a rise in domestic violence rates, as victims were forced to spend more time at home with their abusers.

However, now post Covid-19, Domestic violence rates continue to be high despite significant funding and resources devoted to education and awareness programs. In reflecting on current domestic violence rates, it presents a question:  are current therapeutic models sufficient in meeting the needs of victims in crisis and at serious threat?

Domestic Violence is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach.  Maggie’s Legacy suggest that current therapeutic models of domestic violence awareness and education are good, but potentially insufficient when addressing victims in crisis situations.  Victims experiencing crisis or serious threat require more than just educational and awareness domestic violence insights.

Maggie’s Legacy is specifically designed for victims navigating crisis situations and goes beyond the “what” is domestic violence but delves deeper into the “how” of domestic violence.

Maggie’s Legacy focuses on providing a unique and comprehensive approach to domestic violence by exposing the underlying framework of coercive control.  By understanding the patterns of coercive control, service providers can better support victims in developing safety strategies to protect themselves and their children from harm.

WHAT PROMPTED MAGGIE'S LEGACY

Through lived personal and professional experience, and significant academic scrutiny, Maggies Legacy workshop presents an interpretive framework of mindsets, languages and behaviours that mimics the “how” of coercive control.  This contrasts with many educational and awareness programs that advise ‘what” is coercive control without unpacking the “how” of coercive control. Maggie’s Legacy shares an interpretation of coercive control that appears to mimic modern day domestic violence that is easy to understand and share.

Since inception in 2018, Maggie’s Legacy has received support from seasoned academics, industry experts and victims themselves. Such support has indicated that Maggie’s Legacy interpretation of coercive control mimics modern day domestic violence, and that it is incomparable to other domestic violence education and awareness programs. Maggie’s Legacy offers more than domestic violence education and awareness, it gets under the hood and exposes the mechanics of coercive control in domestic violence in real language and case studies.

WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT MAGGIE'S LEGACY FOR FRONTLINE WORKERS

The interpretive framework of coercive control presented by Maggie’s Legacy provides frontline workers to offer victims a helpful tool to predict, prevent, and prepare to protect from potential harm in abusive relationships. By understanding the patterns and dynamics of coercive control, victims can better recognise the warning signs of abuse and take necessary steps to protect themselves.

Many participants who have attend a workshop suggest that Maggie’s Legacy interpretive framework of coercive control is considered the “weather map” of domestic violence, whereby victims and service providers can predict, prevent, and prepare to protect themselves from harm in accordance with their unique situation. Maggie’s Legacy agrees that there in no one fool proof safety plan that can guarantee safety, but by acknowledging the framework and mechanics of coercive control, it is one step closer to predicting, preventing, and preparing to avoid potential harm.

What does this mean for Service Providers

It is important to note that safety planning and strategies should always be tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of the victim.  In utilising Maggie’s Legacy interpretive coercive control framework, service providers can work collaboratively with victims to develop personalised safety plans that consider their individual needs and concerns.  For organisation supporting domestic violence victims, Maggie’s Legacy is a value-add tool to existing practices, policies, procedures, and therapeutic models.

Maggie’s Legacy acknowledges that victims of domestic violence have navigated their own safety for some time before seeking help from service providers. By understanding Maggie’s Legacy interpretive framework of coercive control, service providers can support victims in developing safety strategies that are tailoured to their unique circumstances and needs.  It’s important to empower victims to take an active role in their own safety planning, rather that imposing a one-size-fits-all approach.

Maggie’s Legacy for Women & Community 2 Days

Maggie’s Legacy is more than a motivational or educational workshop. It unlocked my brain after 38 years of domestic violence. I can now live without shame nd guilt. Thank you Maggie’s Legacy, you have given me my life back. Survivor

Maggie’s Legacy hits the mark in articulating the mechanics of coercive control in a domestic violent relationship. As a survivor I “felt” this but couldn’t explain it. Maggie’s Legacy shares map of coercive control that anyone experiencing domestic violence will easily understand. This workshop is an absolute must for any victim. Survivor

In the women’s workshop, victims will receive an understanding of domestic violence through the lens of coercive control. Victims will receive an understanding of the corresponding impacts on the “how” they are caused to say “Yes, when they want to say No” and on the why they are constantly second guessing or self-analysing themselves.

Maggie’s Legacy is beneficial for any victim who is reluctant to share their situation due to fear or judgement. The workshop will impart a broader understanding of domestic violence that will enable victims to identify and establish a personalised and tailored safety strategy that only they would know.

Maggie’s Legacy for Men & Community 2 Days

Incorporating analogies and metaphors from activities or interests that resonate with the target audience can be a powerful tool in therapy and awareness campaigns. Maggie’s Legacy seems to have found an effective way to connect with men to address the sensitive issue of domestic violence in a unique and impactful manner.
Maggie’s Legacy’s approach to using a football analogy to address domestic violence is a creative and effective way to engage men in discussions about their emotions and relationships. Here’s how it can be beneficial:
1. Relatability: Many men have a strong connection to sports, especially football. By using a familiar and relatable topic, Maggie’s Legacy can create a safe and comfortable environment for men to open up about their feelings and experiences.
2. Breaking Down Barriers: Discussing emotions and sensitive topics like domestic violence can be challenging for anyone, but it can be especially difficult for men due to societal expectations. Using a football analogy can break down these barriers and make it easier for men to communicate.
3. Analogies for Understanding: Analogies from team sports can effectively illustrate the dynamics of coercive control. Comparing unhealthy relationships to a dysfunctional team or an abusive coach can help men better understand and recognize harmful patterns of behavior.
4. Non-Threatening Approach: The football analogy provides a non-threatening way to introduce and discuss the topic of domestic violence. Men may be more willing to engage in the conversation when it is framed in a context they understand and enjoy.
5. Education and Awareness: Through this approach, Maggie’s Legacy can educate men about domestic violence, its signs, and its impact on victims and perpetrators. It also raises awareness about the need for healthy, respectful relationships.
6. Empowerment: Men who may be experiencing or perpetrating domestic violence can feel empowered to seek help or make positive changes in their behaviour when they see the parallels between unhealthy relationship dynamics and issues within a sports team.
If you have specific questions about Maggie’s Legacy for Men or if you’d like more information about resources and support for domestic violence issues, please feel free to ask.

Frontline Workers & Victims Say

“Maggie’s Legacy uncomplicates the complication of Domestic Violence”

Maggie's Legacy gave me the tools to take back control of my life. I can't thank you enough!

“ "The training helped me to understand the dynamics of my own childhood trauma, and domestic violence as a child and also as an adult in a domestic violence situation"..”
"OAMS was introduced to Maggie's legacy a couple of years ago and we knew immediately that we ‘needed’ to partner with this program to push the message that our women who experience any form of violence from their spouse or partner need to be heard and understood. As an Aboriginal Medical Service advocacy, support and engagement for our people is critical, especially those who are the most vulnerable. We absolutely believe the purpose of ‘Maggie's Legacy’ and would encourage other entities to partner."

"I was introduced to Mary in November due to a work environment concern. Almost immediately after connecting with her during our first session, it was really clear that Mary knew what I was navigating and had the expertise & framework to help me through it. This is where Mary presented the Tentacles of Obligation framework she had created through Maggie’s Legacy. Step by step, I was able to see how I was positioned in a toxic work relationship and how I could move through this but most importantly how I can identify people who operate in within the transactional language now and in future. After our first session, I unpacked what we had spoken about with my parents and my safest friends. This framework has been invaluable to me and those who I have shared it with as I now am armoured with the knowledge that Mary has articulately created which empowers me to remain true to myself while being able to operate with those who are different to me. I’m so grateful to have crossed paths with Mary and Maggie’s Legacy."

“As a criminal law lawyer for over 10 years I have represented many defendants in regard to Domestic Violence matters. Initially success for me was winning the defended hearing, which at times included harsh cross-examination of the alleged victim. On numerous occasions my clients charges were withdrawn because the alleged victim did not come to court. On several occasions Police would apply and be granted warrants for their arrest so that they could be brought before the court. It was assumed their non appearance was due to them trying to protect their spouse. As a lawyer you think you know it all. Mary through “Maggies Legacy” opened my eyes to the fact that they were actually protecting themselves and in most occasions their children. The current system does not work for victims of domestic violence. My cross-examination was putting the victim and her children in danger. Victims are getting the wrong advice from those they are told to trust. Everyone that is involved in Domestic Violence in anyway should stop what they are doing now. They must attend a “Maggies Legacy” course and then and only then can they give victims the correct advice and skills to protect themselves and their children. I have now attended 3 “Maggie Legacy” courses and each time I have learnt something new. Don’t assume you know what is best for a victim. Take it from me you don’t.”
